Pillars of Light, a multicultural celebration of Chanukah, will light up Fed Square in a show of unity and hope as our city reopens

One of Victoria’s premier multicultural festivals celebrating Chanukah, Pillars of Light, is returning again this year to Melbourne’s Fed Square, after great success in 2020. From Sunday 28 November to Sunday 5 December 2021, Victorians from all walks of life will be able to safely get together and celebrate the festival of light through free live performances, guest speakers and ceremony. Gandel Foundation is again one of the Principal Partners of the event, together with Fed Square and the City of Melbourne.

Her Excellency the Honourable Linda Dessau AC, Governor of Victoria, and the Right Honourable the Lord Mayor Cr Sally Capp will launch the 8-day program of Pillars of Light. Each evening will feature a tailored program of speakers, performances, cultural moments and guest appearances that explore key themes including inclusivity, sports, harmony, youth, connection, diversity and reconciliation.

LiveNation, Australia’s premier music promoters, have partnered with Pillars of Light to program local multicultural, faith and Indigenous artists that will perform from Fed Square’s main stage each evening. Each stem of the eight branch 12ft high Menorah (candelabra) showcased and lit each evening will represent a different festival theme that celebrates the groups and cultures that comprise the incomparable Victorian landscape.

“This year’s Chanukah celebrates so much more — the sharing of light, hope and emerging out of darkness; something that is so relevant, necessary and meaningful in our current climate,” explains Gabi Kaltmann, Rabbi of the ARK Centre and Director of Pillars of Light.

Bringing together people from a range of different backgrounds, cultures and faith communities over these eight nights, Pillars of Light hopes to create a sense of connection and belonging in the heart of the CBD. Pillars of Light, a multicultural celebration of Chanukah, will light up Fed Square in a show of unity and hope as our city reopens.
