“It’s not just the fabulous sound but the physicality of their playing that marks out the Australian Chamber Orchestra.” Rian Evans, The Guardian, London
“Everyone plays as if their life depended on it, which invariably grips the attention of the listener.” Neville Cohn, The West Australian
The Australian Chamber Orchestra (ACO) continues to dazzle audiences across the globe with its dynamic playing and inspired programming. On Tuesday, 24 February 2015, the Orchestra makes a highly anticipated return to the Melbourne Hebrew Congregation (MHC), South Yarra, Melbourne, bringing stirring interpretations of some of the most memorable classical works to the beautiful acoustics of the Synagogue. For the first time at MHC the ACO’s Artistic Director, Richard Tognetti, will lead the performance on his 1743 Guarneri del Gesù violin.
The concert will start with perhaps one of JS Bach’s most famous works – the Concerto for Two Violins – with starring roles for Richard Tognetti and ACO Principal Violin Satu Vänskä. This work is considered to be one of the finest examples of music from the late Baroque period and is sure to seduce the MHC audience.
Haydn’s 83rd Symphony ‘La Poule’ is the second of the six so-called Paris Symphonies. The nickname – meaning The Hen – refers to the cheerful clucking tune in the first movement.
And a fitting climax to the program is the finale of Beethoven’s renowned Kreutzer Sonata. Known for its demanding violin part, here played by Tognetti, the final movement is both jubilant and boisterous.
The ACO’s performance at the MHC is made possible through the generous support of Lead Patrons Gandel Foundation and The Pratt Foundation, and Patrons Mr Marc Besen AC and Mrs Eva Besen AO, the Leo and Mina Fink Fund and Drs Victor and Karen Wayne.
The support of these Patrons made it possible for talented young Jewish musicians from Sholem Aleichem College to engage in an intimate workshop with Ilya Isakovich, one of the ACO’s world class violinists. Seven of these students will play alongside ACO musicians for a short performance at the start of the concert.
Gandel Foundation’s generous support will also enable the ACO to present a private duet performance for the residents of the Emmy Monash Aged Care Facility.
