HELMUT NEWTON: In Focus opens

The Jewish Museum of Australia – Gandel Centre of Judaica (JMA), in partnership with the Helmut Newton Foundation, recently launched HELMUT NEWTON: In Focus, exploring the extraordinary life of one of the most influential and provocative fashion photographers of all time.

The Hon. Danny Pearson, Minister for Creative Industries (pictured in the middle), joined JMA President Gideon Kline (right) and JMA CEO Jessica Bram (left) for the official opening in April 2022.

The exhibition explores Newton’s early life and career, shining a light on his Jewish roots and youth in berlin, his escape from Germany at the outbreak of WWII and his eventual internment at Tatura in regional Victoria as an enemy alien.

Visitors will have a chance to view an expansive collection of trailblazing photographer’s most recognisable and quintessential works, including 78 original Newton photographs.

Gandel Foundation and Gandel family have been intricately connected with JMA for decades, including partnering on several occasions to deliver blockbuster exhibitions. Following on from past major successes with exhibitions featuring Andy Warhol, Amy Winehouse, Mirka Mora and even the multi-museum collaboration on the “Grandmothers” exhibition by five multicultural museums, Gandel and JMA have again joined forces to bring to the public HELMUT NEWTON: In Focus.
