GANDEL FOUNDATION ALLOCATIONS IN SUPPORT OF THE COMMUNITY SECTOR’S RESPONSE TO COVID-19 – phase two
The Board of Trustees of Gandel Foundation recently allocated the second tranche of grant funding in support of charities working to address the challenges posed by the COVID-19 health emergency.
This phase of community support saw an allocation of $1.115 million in grants to 13 organisations.
Funds were primarily directed towards grants addressing:
- food security, material aid and homelessness challenges;
- mental health and community resilience needs;
- support for the NFP sector to overcome technological challenges and build their digital capability and resilience; and
- support for other needs such as domestic violence support and digital necessities of vulnerable children.
Below is the list of all December grant recipients with a brief description of the funded activity.
COVID-19 Grant Recipients in December 2020 (in alphabetical order):
- Organisation: batyr
Purpose: expanding batyr’s mental health program (batry@school) to 19 Victorian schools
2. Organisation: C Care
Purpose: additional support to further scale up food aid for the most vulnerable, elderly and isolated people in the Jewish community
3. Organisation: FareShare
Purpose: funding for urgently required equipment and transport needs to further expand the meals production and distribution
4. Organisation: Foodbank Victoria
Purpose: expanding and scaling up food distribution program and a matching grant for Foodbank appeal
5. Organisation: Infoxchange
Purpose: support for the Digital Transformation Hub, supporting NFPs to overcome technological challenges and build their tech capability and resilience for future success (funded in partnership with the Lord Mayor’s Charitable Foundation)
6. Organisation: Launch Housing
Purpose: funding for the “Functional Zero” program, helping address rough sleeping in Melbourne
7. Organisation: Melbourne Jewish Charity Fund
Purpose: support to expand food and material aid for the most vulnerable people and families in the Jewish community
8. Organisation: Safe Steps
Purpose: support for crisis care packages for mother and babies affected by domestic violence
9. Organisation: Souper Kitchen
Purpose: scaling the food aid for the most vulnerable people in the Jewish community
10. Organisation: State Schools Relief
Purpose: digital education packages for children in housing precincts
11. Organisation: St Kilda Mums
Purpose: funding to provide support for mothers and babies on the waiting list
12. Organisation: St Vincent de Paul Society – Vic.
Purpose: support for the Vinnies Soup Vans to deliver more meals to people struggling with homelessness
13. Organisation: Youth Activating Youth
Purpose: funding to provide material and other aid to the most vulnerable people in the community, including youth and the elderly.

UPDATE ON GANDEL FOUNDATION COMMUNITY GRANTS (December 2020)
Gandel Foundation is committed to supporting the Australian community and the not-for-profit sector through the ongoing difficulties and challenges posed by COVID-19.
Back in April 2020 the Board of Trustees made a decision to temporarily suspend the general Community Grants program of Gandel Foundation. This decision was made with the aim of concentrating efforts on the COVID-19 response, and it will be reviewed in 2021, as the health emergency develops.
At the same time, the Trustees continue to retain flexibility to respond to some smaller scale grant requests, related to COVID-19 or otherwise, through direct communication with our past, current and future potential grant partners.
